Thrust-fold belts as exploration targets

There are about 25 thrust-fold belts with commercial oil and gas production and exploration opportunity, world-wide. Roughly a quarter of the world’s conventional oil is in thrust-fold belts, with the Zagros in Iran and Iraq accounting for the great majority of it.
Overthrust terranes are commonly held to be high-risk. Is that really the case, and if so what can we do to reduce perceived risk?
